Abril Baloney Sutherland is an associate in the firm’s Real Estate Department. Sutherland works on a variety of contract, real estate, and property matters, including title, acquisition, expropriation and adjudication.  She also handles bankruptcy proceedings and general litigation before federal and state courts and administrative agencies.

BACKGROUND: 

Born New Orleans, Louisiana, admitted to bar, 2004, Louisiana.  Sutherland was appointed by Governor Kathleen Blanco as a Commissioner on the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (formerly Boards of Commissioners of Orleans, East Jefferson and Lake Borne Basin Levee Districts), where she served as Vice President and Chair of the Legal and Legislative Committee.

Loyola University New Orleans, School of Law (J.D., 2003), with Certificate in International Law.  International Law Institute, The College of William and Mary School of Law and Fundación Universitaria San Pablo, Madrid Spain, 2003. University of Richmond (B.A. International Relations, 1999).  Public Policy and International Affairs Scholar, University of Michigan, 1998. Public Policy and International Affairs Fellow, International Internship Program, Centro Venezolano Americano, Caracas, Venezuela, 1999.  Field Study: “Art, Architecture and Politics in Cuba”, Virginia Tech University, Havana, Cuba (1996).

Description of Practice:

Engaged in real estate transactions, including land disputes,  expropriation and quick take proceedings, contracts pertaining to the sale and lease of property, rights of way and easements, title examination and real estate closings; Ms. Sutherland is experienced with drafting concession and construction contracts for the New Orleans Aviation Board, providing legal research and opinions on issues involving ethics, public utilities, state and local civil service, Board liability, policies, procedure and rules of order, federal, state and local bid law, procurement, and open meetings law;

Speaks, reads and writes Spanish fluently.
